Richard Whincop’s adventures in Italy
In his talk to Friends of Ravenna in March Richard described how he painted a series of five murals in Cosenza in Calabria. These are now displayed on the walls of the old centre as part of the Museo Storico all’Aperto. If you go to his website here you can see his paintings of the Normans in Cosenza. Four other European artists took part in the project and you can see their contributions in website here An article on Richard’s talk will be available in the next edition of Gemelli.

VISIONS OF VENICE
An Illustrated Talk
by Sarah Quill
Tuesday 25th April 2017 at 7.30pm
The Assembly Room, Council House
North Street, Chichester
Members £9.00 Non members £10.00
For more than 40 years Sarah Quill has been photographing the architecture and daily life of Venice, creating a unique and ever-growing photographic archive. Sarah’s illustrated talk will show some of the changes that have taken place in Venice since she began photographing the city in the 1970s.
A trustee of the Venice in Peril Fund, Sarah has worked between Venice and London for many years to create a photograph archive of Venetian architecture, environment and daily life. She has been a freelance photographer since 1971 when she began her photographic documentation of Venice. Working as a stills photographer Sarah took set photographs for feature films including Wagner (1982), A Room with a View (1985) and The Orchid House (1991). Her book, Ruskin’s Venice:The Stones Revisited, has recently been published in a new edition.
Bruschette and a glass of wine will be served after the talk
Sixteen members joined this year’s visit when we celebrated the twentieth anniversary of our twinning. The Chairmen of both Associations and representatives of the two city councils emphasised the importance of twinning associations in fostering cultural understanding and mutual respect.
- The unveiling of a mural designed by students to show aspects of Ravenna and Chichester.
- A presentation of 3 videos made by students to explore the concept of twinning.
- An evening at the Theatro d’Alighieri attended by over 300 people to mark our anniversary and the presentation to Ravenna of the European Council’s Plaque of Honour for its work in twinning.
- An excellent concert given by the Orchestra di Giovani, which followed the formal part of the evening event.
- Tours of the city with visits to churches decorated with outstanding Byzantine mosaics; an exhibition of contemporary mosaics and leisurely strolls through delightful squares and streets.
- The opportunity to sample Italian food and wine.
- A visit to a Folklore Museum culminating in making the traditional dish of Emilia Romagna – Piadini –which formed the main course of our evening meal.
- The very warm welcome and generous hospitality of our hosts.
For the Italian speakers among us, here is a clip from a local newspaper in
Ravenna reporting the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the twinning links.
Just a selection of pictures of some of the members and guests attending
various events and activities during their recent visit to Ravenna.
Some of the faces you will easily recognise and others to which you
cannot immediately put a name, will however be familiar.
